Hampshire Highways NewsletterHampshire Highways’ winter teams will be on 24/7 standby over the festive season, ready for whatever the weather brings, to ensure Hampshire’s roads are clear and passable during Christmas and New Year.

Some of the new winter vehicles are now sporting their own names, having been named by local school children, BBC Radio Solent listeners, and social media followers of our highways service@hantshighways on Twitter. So, when the temperatures drop, keep an eye out for Gritter Garbo, Luke Snow Walker and Gritty Gritty Bang Bang among others!

 

Everyone can help in their communities to keep Hampshire moving during cold and freezing weather. Across Hampshire there are more than 3,000 blue or yellow bins filled with salt for use in the community on public roads and pavements. It’s important people are ready to adapt the way they drive in winter when the conditions can make driving more hazardous, such as:

  • Reduce your speed. The chances of skidding are much greater and your stopping distance will increase massively.
  • Only travel at a speed at which you can stop within the distance you can see to be clear.
  • Speed limits are the maximum in ideal conditions; in difficult conditions, they can often be too fast.
  • Avoid harsh braking and acceleration, or sharp steering.
  • Always reduce your speed smoothly and in plenty of time on slippery surfaces.
